Kampala – 6th November 2025: The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has today met with a visiting team from the Vatican Press at the Diocesan Secretariat of the Diocese of Kampala. The Vatican press team was headed by Dr. Anthony Ssembatya Kimbowa.

The interview was focusing on the vital role of the Church in the socio-economic transformation of Ugandan communities and the inspiring story of Mr. John Mukalazi Kamya, the Founder and Chairman of Hamilton Telecom Group the parent company of PaxTel, AgroTel, and several other ventures.

Mr. Kamya founded PaxTel, a telecom company dedicated to supporting the Christian community and Salamtel, designed to serve the Islamic community with affordable voice calls, fast internet, and PaxSente, a mobile money transfer platform. His motivation was rooted in concern over the high levels of profit repatriation by foreign telecom companies operating in Uganda and the need to retain value within local communities.
During the meeting, Archbishop Kaziimba commended Mr. Kamya for his visionary leadership and support toward the self-sustainability of the Church of Uganda. He applauded him for introducing Paxtel as a business model to unite the Anglican and Catholic faiths in Uganda and several other faiths in Uganda.
“When I met him and we discussed the plight of the retired Clergy, he pledged UGX 50 Million, and because of his concern for Karamoja, he also gave UGX 10 million. We have continued to discuss ways to transform the livelihoods of our Christians through AgroTel and other ventures that promote business evangelism.” Archbishop Kaziimba said

The Archbishop further revealed that through the Church’s partnership with Hamilton Telecom Group, several initiatives are being developed to create distributor centres and employment opportunities, especially for the youth.
“I joined PaxTel, and since then, I have been enjoying the fastest internet and clear calls. I am optimistic that all our Church structures will embrace PaxTel, which is now our official communication partner helping us transform Church of Uganda’s entire ecosystem.” Archbishop Kaziimba said.

During their stay in Uganda, the Vatican Press team also met Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, visited several congregations of Nuns, and toured projects founded and supported by Mr. Kamya, documenting his faith-inspired contribution to national development.
