Archbishop’s tweeter (X) thread on Bishop Hannington Day, 29th October 2023:

Today, we gathered in Kyando, Mayuge District in Busoga Diocese to celebrate Bishop James Hannington Day. I thank my brother Bishop, Dr. Hannington Mutebi, the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala for delivering a very powerful message on the purpose of martyrdom.

Bishop Hannington Mutebi gave me a book containing very rich history of Bishop James Hannington which he generously offered to Uganda Christian University where I am the Chancellor. I am sure it will be a great value addition to the knowledge wealth of the Institution.

I also received a revised edition of the book, “The legacy of James Hannington” by Rev. Canon. Dr. John Patrick Magumba, the Dean of Bishop Hannington School of Divinity and Theology of Busoga University. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni launched the first edition last year.

Bishop James Hannington’s martyrdom teaches us many things, including the following;

Commitment to Faith: His unwavering commitment to his Christian faith, even in the face of persecution and death, teaches us as Christians the importance of standing firm in our beliefs.

Perseverance, Sacrifice and Service: His dedication to serving the people of Africa and spreading Christianity despite multiple challenges and dangers underscores the value of perseverance in the Christian journey.

We ought to be living sacrifices for God’s word to thrive.

Missionary Zeal: His passion for spreading Christianity to new regions encourages us to be zealous in our mission to share the Gospel with others, even in challenging circumstances.

His martyrdom brings inspiration and a deeper commitment to our faith and service to humanity.
