KISUBI, UGANDA — Brothers of Christian Instruction of the Province of St Teresa of the Child Jesus Uganda have marked 100 years of service in Uganda, with religious and national leaders commending the congregation for its contribution to education, character formation and the country’s socio-economic development.
The centenary celebrations, held today, Saturday September 5, 2026 at the St Mary’s College Kisubi playgrounds, were organised under the theme, “We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.”
The Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, was the Main Celebrant, assisted by the Bishop of Masaka Diocese, the Rt Rev Serverus Jjumba; the Bishop of Kotido Diocese, the Rt Rev Dominic Eibu; the Bishop Emeritus of Lugazi Diocese, the Rt Rev Matthias Ssekamanya; and other clergy and Religious.
Vice President H.E. Jessica Alupo was the Chief Guest, representing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, Prince Kassim Nakibinge and other dignitaries also attended the celebrations.
In his message, Archbishop Ssemogerere paid tribute to the Brothers for a century of service and challenged them, their alumni and those associated with their institutions to safeguard the legacy built over the years.
“After 100 years, there is a name to carry and a name to protect,” Archbishop Ssemogerere said.
He urged the Brothers and their alumni to be good ambassadors of the institution by upholding the Christian values and discipline for which the congregation has become known.
President Museveni, in a message delivered by Vice President Alupo, commended the Brothers of Christian Instruction for their contribution to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation, particularly through education and human development.
He pledged the Government’s support towards the Brothers’ development plans as they embark on their second century of ministry in Uganda.
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, an alumnus of both St Henry’s College Kitovu and St Mary’s College Kisubi, hailed the Brothers for placing discipline and character formation at the heart of education.
“The Brothers have made an invaluable contribution to nurturing generations of morally upright, disciplined and responsible citizens who continue to serve our nation with distinction,” Mayiga said.
He said, Buganda Kingdom attaches great importance to educational institutions that combine academic excellence with character formation and service to society.
“The Kingdom of Buganda deeply appreciates institutions that uphold the values of integrity, hard work and service to humanity. These are values that resonate deeply with our vision of empowering the people of Uganda through education, moral leadership and sustainable development,” Mayiga added.
The Provincial Superior, Brother Casio Aizire, said the congregation has grown significantly since establishing its mission in Uganda a century ago.
According to Brother Aizire, Uganda now has more than 190 indigenous Brothers of Christian Instruction dedicated to the education and formation of children and young people in human and Christian values.
He said the Brothers currently serve through 25 educational institutions, continuing a mission that has shaped generations of Ugandans through education, Christian formation and discipline.
Some of the prominent schools of Brothers of Christian Instruction include; St Mary’s College Kisubi, St Henry’s College Kitovu, Bishop Comboni College Kambuga, St Charles Lwanga Kasasa, Caltec Academy Makerere, St Edward’s College Bukumi, St Savio Primary School among others.
